Private John Ramsey
John Ramsey was born on 25 August 1897 at Creevamoy, Broughshane, County Antrim, the fourth of thirteen children of labourer Henry Ramsey and his wife Ann (née Thompson). He grew up at nearby Drumleckney, but by the time of the 1911 Census was living at Killyree, County Antrim, where he worked on the farm of Archibald McFetridge.
Ramsey enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 6 August 1917 (regimental number 2648 or 2649 – later Corps of Hussars No.71936). He trained at the regiment's reserve camp at Antrim, remaining there until the end of the war.
On 4 February 1919 at Antrim Ramsey re-enlisted, serving in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) (No.33456 – later Army No.392015). He was discharged on 4 July 1922, his military conduct recorded as 'very good'.
On 13 April 1926 Ramsey, with his wife and two young children, emigrated to New Zealand. He died in Hamilton, Waikato, on 10 April 1965 and was buried in the Hamilton Park Cemetery.
Two of Ramsey's brothers also served in the war – James Ramsey in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and Robert Thompson Ramsey in the Royal Scots.
